Paytm and ICICI are the top choices when it comes to Fastag

When it comes to solutions which I don't understand too deeply or a choice is quite difficult to make, I just go by the popular vote on the assumption that the popular choice will certainly not be too crappy. Granted, it may not be the best choice but it won't be the worst either and it'll most likely be much above average.

From which provider should you get your Fastag from? This is an important question because Fastag isn't just a sticker but a whole service package which helps you avoid long queues at toll booths by having the toll amount deducted directly from your wallet (or savings account) upon an RFID scan at the toll booth. So, two important things to ensure are that its secure (only the toll amount gets deducted and nothing else), and that the scan works seamlessly. Another thing to look at is the ease of KYC or documentation process required to get your Fastag activated. Also important is that it has a good customer service, so you may contact them when something goes wrong or you need something done manually (like cancelling the Fastag upon selling of your vehicle).

Now, who are the top two Fastag service providers in our country which presumably most auto experts think are the best? Interestingly, the popular automobile forum site called www.team-bhp.com carried out a survey regarding this and this is how the results stand:

Paytm is clearly the popular choice of most auto experts, followed by ICICI and HDFC who are also popular names in Fastag discussions. As I said, Paytm may not be the best. I've also read Paytm horror stories where they mistakenly sent the Fastags to wrong owners who were left bewildered about why their wallet is getting deducted all of a sudden even though their vehicle isn't anywhere near the highway! But this mostly happened around December, 2019 when Fastag deadline was announced and people placed too many orders in a rush. But their service seems to have improved since then and they have stopped making such mistakes.

I don't know much about ICICI/HDFC Fastags as I haven't used either of them but their proponents seem to be satisfied with them. An important thing to note is that if you choose a "proper bank" for Fastag like ICICI/HDFC/AXIS/SBI, make sure that you don't link your savings account with your Fastag, you don't want it directly getting deducted at the flick of a RFID device. This is a relatively new technology and you never know when things go wrong. Make sure its linked to a prepaid wallet instead which is much under your control.
