Whoever may become the Maharashtra CM, the Voters have become the real losers

The high decibel drama going on in Maharashtra politics since almost a week has come to an end today. But the kind of selling of buying of ideologies I saw in the last few days made me question the very existence of democracy and the integrity of the leaders of our country. Does the voter even matter at all?

Why vote at all when your cast vote will be ultimately traded by power brokers in high positions? This is the question almost every Indian is asking today. People take leaves from their offices and other important work to participate in the country's democracy of which they are stakeholders but after seeing what happened this week, I doubt any Indian will be too thrilled about voting in any election soon!

In the 1990s, politics was much cleaner than today even when there was no anti-defection law. Some things were simply granted in life. For example, Shiv Sena would never join Congress under Bal Thackeray, that was his legacy of supporting the idea of hindutva zealously. Similarly, Congress would never join a saffron party, even that was a given. Doing that would be doing away with secularism. But after seeing what happened in the Indian politics in last few days, one can say that almost anything can happen now!

Casting a vote in the ballot today simply doesn't matter because there is no saying that the X party you voted for won't be forming an alliance with the Y party you didn't vote! If that were my intention, why would I vote for the X party in the first place? And if that were going to happen anyway, why would I even bother participating in this madness? At least, my conscience will be clear that I wasn't any stakeholder in this kind of horse-trading or party-trading!

This thing should not be normalized. If politicians are left alone to do their shady dealings about sharing power in this manner, this trend will continue. Someone should put a check on them, ideally its the Election Commission's job. If they don't do anything about this soon, the world's largest democracy might soon become a laughing stock in front of the world.
