Pune patient ordered to pay 1 crore in defamation fines to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, Chinchwad

For some reason, this recent incident in Pune isn't getting much attention from mainstream media for whatever reasons. It could be the ongoing elections in Maharashtra or something else where all the limelight has gone.

Basically, our story starts few years ago when 36 years old Tejinder Singh Ahluwalia gets himself admitted to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital in Chinchwad on January 4, 2013. But upon getting discharged, Tejinder defaulted on the hospital bill and made allegations against the hospital.

According to Tejinder, he went there to get treatment for a simple case of acidity but the doctors wrongly insisted that he undergo an angiography surgery:

“I was returning from Mumbai. On nearing the PCMC area, I started feeling uneasy, as I was suffering from acidity and even started sweating. Since Aditya Birla Hospital was nearby, I asked my driver to take me there. After reaching there, I was admitted and some basic tests were done. All the tests were normal and the doctors then gave me some medicine and I started feeling better. However, later thedoctors suggested that I undergo angiography,”

However, the hospital authorities refuted his allegations and claimed that the patient’s condition was critical and surgery was essential to save his life. The medical facility even accused the patient of assaulting the hospital security guard while escaping from the hospital premise without settling the bill.

The case went to the court, of course, where the patient and hospital battled there for a very long time. Then couple days ago on 17th October, a senior surgeon from Pune, Amit Thadani makes this tweet:

Patient absconds from hospital without settling his bill, then rants on media and social media making fake allegations on hospital. Hospital decides to sue for recovery and defamation. Six years later, court orders patient to pay cost of treatment with damages and interest.
Apparently, Pune's sessions court has ruled in the hospital's favor and Tejinder has been ordered to pay Rs. 1 crore in defamation fines along with his original bill amount of Rs. 3,89,795 plus 18% interest till date on this entire amount.
